<There will be a technical paper presented on cost/benefit analysis of various kinds of DRAM (I found the original link here a few days ago).>

I have that paper printed out right next to me. Without going into gory details, let me just say that the paper does some invalid comparisons between DRDRAM and SDRAM, and the simulations that are run isn't very close to the real world. It does state the obvious, that latency is more important than bandwidth, but the paper fails to point out a real solution to the latency problem. And neither has any other DRAM technology.

<The other issue is that if the industry really doesn't want to pay for Rambus' royalties, then they can rally behind AMD (or power pc) as an alternative to Intel. Given Intel's paranoid nature, it is likely that Intel will accomodate them by droping the all out support for Rambus rather than risk losing market share.>

Given that Intel long-term future is shaped around Rambus, and that new designs and chipsets will further exploit the advantages that DRDRAM provides, it's pretty clear to me that Intel isn't going to just leave Rambus in the lurch. They might not be as gung ho as before in the transition to DRDRAM, but that doesn't mean that DRDRAM is DOA.

Sun Tzu,

<The other issue is that if the industry really doesn't want to pay for Rambus' royalties, then they can rally behind AMD (or power pc) as an alternative to Intel.>

AMD has licensed the DRDRAM technology as well. Of course, this doesn't mean that they have to use it, but if Intel moves that direction, AMD will follow eventually.
