SAN Solution Services

<<Hitachi last week unveiled its Freedom Data Networks strategy, which links the company's own hardware and services with hardware and software from third parties to provide storage area networks for Fortune 500 companies. The partners include Ancor Communications Inc. for switches, Gadzoox Networks Inc. for hubs and Crossroads Systems Inc. for routers, Hitachi officials said.

In addition, Hitachi has opened an interoperability testing center at its Santa Clara, Calif., headquarters that will test its storage systems with third-party software, servers and storage systems.

The new services for open systems, called SAN Solution Services, include assessment, configuration management, system design, project management, installation and business continuance.

The services that come along with the SAN were critical to a Minneapolis health care provider that bought hardware and services from the company.

"It's a relatively new hardware suite, and in order to find someone who knows about it, it's better to go with Hitachi [for their services]," said an IT director at the health care provider. "Relatively speaking, Hitachi services are a hell of a lot cheaper than Sun [Microsystems Corp.] or Data General [Corp.] basic services.">>
