M-WINS to Provide Global Communications to GSA with Iridium Services; U.S. Government Expands Its Use of the Iridium Satellite Network

Business Wire - May 03, 1999 09:59

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 3, 1999--The U.S. General Services
Administration (GSA) has awarded a contract to Motorola Worldwide Information Network Services
(M-WINS) for Motorola satellite communications products and Iridium (R) services.

The contract has a potential value of $52 million over a two-year period ending April 30, 2001. The
contract enables U.S. government agencies, contractors associated with the federal government, and
numerous organizations recognized by the U.S. government to purchase Motorola Satellite Series
(TM) portable satellite communications products and Iridium voice and paging services through the
GSA.

M-WINS, a business division of Motorola's Space Systems and Services Division, will provision the
services procured under the GSA contract on the Iridium North American gateway in Tempe, Ariz.

"We are excited about the opportunity to work with GSA to help fulfill the communications needs of
U.S. government organizations," said John Weidman, vice president of M-WINS. "We believe the
Iridium system complements the existing government and commercial communications infrastructure
and will provide the government with more options to efficiently carry out its day-to-day operations.

"Due to Iridium's global coverage and small size, we expect it to be used in many situations where
rapid deployment and interoperability with existing land lines are required, especially in remote areas."

"With the Iridium system, for the first time, there is a worldwide handheld portable telephone," said
John Werle, vice president of Motorola Space and Electronics Inc. "With no dependence on cell sites
or phone lines, users will never be out of the service area anywhere on the globe.

"Already Iridium has helped humanity with mountain rescues, hurricane relief, stranded travelers and a
host of other unforeseen ways that being able to be in contract with anyone from anywhere have
fostered."

The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) of the U.S. Department of Defense recently
announced a $219 million contract with M-WINS to provide Iridium services through its U.S.
Government-dedicated Iridium gateway in Hawaii.

M-WINS can assist users in determining their requirements for hardware and service and, if necessary,
offer customized communications solutions. M-WINS customers will receive global customer care
support, technical assistance, and access to the most current product releases.
