L and Thread: There is an article in the May 3 New York Times on MP3 and the issue of piracy. What it suggests is that the companies whose chips allow for unrestricted copying will be in great demand, despite the concerns of the owners of the music copyrights. SanDisk has a great strategy here - making a component that goes a long way toward preventing piracy. But what will stop other competitors from featuring devices that allow users to make copies at will? Or, put another way, can SanDisk compete with devices that well nigh encourage piracy? One answer to this could come from the music publishers themselves, who could band together and sue the companies that make MP3 players that have no curbs on copying. This has been done, not altogether successfully against commercial enterprises, such as bars, which often play background music taped from radio broadcasts.

SanDisk clearly has taken the ethical road here. I hope their success will be more than just based on performance and price.
