QUANTUM ANNOUNCES GENERAL AVAILABILITY OF NEW 10,000 RPM ATLAS 10K AND 7,200 RPM ATLAS IV DISK DRIVES
Industry's first Ultra 160/m SCSI drives offer top performance, reliability and manageability for today's most demanding applications
MILIPITAS, Calif., May 3, 1998 - Quantum Corporation (NMS:QNTM) today announced general availability of its 10,000 RPM Atla(tm) 10K and 7,200 RPM Atlas(tm) IV, the industry's first Ultra 160/m SCSI disk drives. Both drives offer exceptional performance, reliability and manageability for data-intensive server, workstation and storage subsystem applications, such as those utilized by video broadcast professionals, as well as corporate enterprise developers.
Quantum is shipping the new drives to the company's nationwide network of leading industrial and commercial distributors. The company also has delivered evaluation units of both products to OEMs, and has completed broad compatibility testing with leading system platforms, operating systems and host adapters. Additionally, Quantum is beginning volume shipments of these products to major system and server vendors.
"With the availability of the Atlas IV and Atlas 10K, businesses can now benefit from two storage products that are specifically designed for today's high-end applications through exceptional drive performance, high capacities and unsurpassed drive reliability," said Marlin Miller, vice president of Quantum's workstation and system storage group.
The Quantum Atlas10K and the Quantum Atlas IV are among the first hard drives to offer 36GB capacity in a half-height, 3-1/2-inch form factor, as well as18GB and 9GB capacities in a low-profile, 1-inch-high footprint. Just as significant, both drive families support the advanced data integrity capabilities, blazing bus transfer rate, and breakthrough data manageability features - such as the ability to intelligently test and manage end users' storage networks - inherent in Ultra160/m SCSI interface technology.
"In order to provide customers with the outstanding manageability and flexibility of the Ultra 160/m interface, we are integrating Quantum's new Atlas IV and Atlas 10K hard disk drives into our GigaSTOR/160 storage enclosures," said Jack Corrao, vice president of engineering at ANDATACO. "ANDATACO's Ultra 160/m storage enclosures will offer backward compatibility with existing SCSI, making it easy for customers to benefit from the new high-performance Atlas hard disk drives."
Quantum's Atlas IV Offers Outstanding Price/Performance
The Quantum Atlas IV drive family provides outstanding price/performance for a broad spectrum of high-end storage applications that are cost-sensitive, yet still require high drive capacities, excellent performance and uninterrupted data availability.
Besides its 7,200 RPM rotation, the Quantum Atlas IV features a 6.9 ms average seek time, 257 Mb/sec maximum internal transfer rate, and the same rugged reliability as the Quantum Atlas 10K. With the Atlas-class architecture on a cost-effective platform, the Quantum Atlas IV is targeted for the same storage environments as the three previous generations of Atlas products. They include mainstream server, workstation, and storage subsystem applications such as file/print and email servers; engineering and graphics workstations; and relational databases and data warehousing.
Quantum's Atlas 10K Targets Today's Most Demanding Applications
The Quantum Atlas 10K drive family delivers lightning-fast data access and sustained data streams critical for data-intensive server, workstation and storage subsystem applications. These applications include online-line transaction processing (OLTP) computers, large-scale ISP server installations, 3-D image rendering, and broadcast video systems. The Atlas 10K meets these high-performance requirements through its 10,000 RPM rotation, 5 ms average seek time, and 315 MB/sec maximum internal transfer rate. The Quantum Atlas 10K offers 36GB capacity in a half-height, 3-1/2-inch form factor, as well as 18GB and 9GB capacities in a low-profile, 1-inch-high footprint.
Pricing and Availability
The 9GB and 18GB capacity drives for the Atlas IV and Atlas 10K are available today, and the 36GB capacity drives will be shipping soon. Manufacturer's suggested retail prices for the new Quantum drives are: Atlas IV Atlas 10K 9GB $595 $795
18GB $895 $1,195
36GB $1,495 $1,995 The Atlas IV and Atlas 10K today are available through Quantum's distributors, which include Arrow ICP, Bell Microproducts, Gates Arrow, Marshall, Wyle Systems Group, Synnex, Ingram Micro and Ingram and Globelle in Canada.
