Per today's WSJ, Micrcosoft did indeed file papers with the SEC to sell GMGC shares, but the paper points out that Microsoft has also done that in the past without following through by selling shares. Following is a the relevant snippet taken from the WSJ online edition:

General Magic rose for a sixth day amid Internet-fed speculation of a possible takeover. Shares of the Sunnyvale, Calif., software company rose 1/2 to 5 7/8, up 68% since April 23. A company spokeswoman declined to comment on speculation that General Magic might be acquired by Microsoft or Sun Microsystems. However, Microsoft recently filed papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission that would allow it to sell its 10% stake in General Magic, acquired as part of an investment last year. Microsoft has filed similar papers before without selling the stock. Spokeswomen for Microsoft and Sun declined to comment.
