The real number that is missing is how many of that number are active. Amazon does not remove people when they are dead, etc.

Yes but they have innovative ways of keeping them alive even though they may not be interested in buying books. They have a baby grand piano giveaway that you click on once and you are entered. I hate contests myself but couldn't resist entering that one. We all know a lot of traffic surf's amzn website but doesn't actually buy anything, the commentary boards are like a newsgroup for readers. BTW I tried to use shopping.com recently with great difficulty, imo amzn is pulling ahead technically again from the other booksellers but the caviat is the drugstore sites which appear to be pretty good, maybe other retailers are finally getting the hang of how to do a tech project.

Exactly. Amazon could help us all by telling us how many unique customers actually placed an order during said quarter. I'm sure that number is growing impressively too, though.
