BUSINESS IN ASIA TODAY - MAY 4, 1999

May 04, 1999 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- Business in Asia on May 4, 1999. A summary prepared by Asia Pulse (http://www.asiapulse.com), the real-time, Asia-based wire with exclusive news, market intelligence and business opportunities:

AUSTRALIA'S HARGRAVES TO TAKE OVER DIVERSIFIED MINERAL PERTH - Gold miner Hargraves Resources has won a battle for Diversified Mineral Resources NL (DMR), after DMR's board urged acceptance of its takeover bid. DMR's board had previously rejected Hargraves' offer of one share plus 10 cents for every four DMR shares, but said support for the bid from South African gold miner Durban Roodepoort Deep Ltd (DRD) would deliver Hargraves 83% control. DRD bought a 14.9% stake in DMR last week, and said it would swap the stake for shares in Hargraves, in which it had also acquired 13 per cent.
