Perhaps I'm looking for a problem that doesn't exist, but does this worry you at all?

Following the initial deployment in Atlanta, BellSouth Mobility will evaluate the service and will announce future implementation plans in its other markets. BellSouth Mobility will have exclusive rights to the General Magic Portico service for one year in its markets.

According to the press release, here is BellSouth's market:

BellSouth Cellular Corp. companies, BellSouth Mobility (BMI) and American Cellular Communications Corporation (ACC), provide wireless communications services to more than 5.6 million customers in 13 states. BMI operates with its partners in eight Southeastern states. ACC markets operate under a variety of names in California, Texas, and Virginia, and as Cellular One in Indiana.

So, it would seem like a conflict with Porticos current resellers. Also, it puts a big limitation on anybody else that wants to resell Portico such as Wireless Knowledge and the "eleven other carriers" that are currently trialing the system.

Yes, 29.95 a month. What does is really mean? How much of this money will General Magic get? It's a great announcement but it does have some concerns for me.

I hope we get a Markman memo pretty quickly to flesh out this deal.

If General Magic is signing exclusive deals, this may well be the first of several deals. If these companies want this service they better not wait.

Perhaps this exclusive deal makes the wording of the Wireless Knowledge announcement interesting. They didn't sign on to use Portico. I have to check again but from remember it seems to me that they signed on to use Magic Talk.

Regards, Mark
