PixStream VDS5000 enables delivery of video from Telco head-end to the

home over ADSL

WATERLOO, ON, May 4 /CNW-PRN/ - PixStream Incorporated, a leading developer of video networking
solutions, today announced that NBTel has selected the PixStream VDS5000 professional video networking
platform as part of its solution to deliver multiple television channels to the home over existing copper
telephone lines using ADSL technology. Customers are able to access a full selection of channels over their
phone lines, providing them with an alternative to traditional cable or satellite dish services.

The PixStream VDS5000 system will act as a complete broadcast video head-end, taking in uncompressed and
compressed video feeds and adapting them to a network suitable for DSL distribution. The system is a flexible,
''carrier class'' video networking platform that enables network service providers to demodulate, descramble,
multiplex, remultiplex, decode, encode and adapt multiple channels from a variety of broadcast audio and video
inputs to a number of telecommunication networks. PixStream video networking solutions can also be used for
interactive video services such as broadband video conferencing, interactive distance learning (IDL),
tele-medicine and monitoring applications.

NBTel is known as one of the most advanced telecommunications companies in North America and has created
the VideoActive(TM) network, a revolutionary high-speed or ''broadband'' network, to provide customers with
innovative services. NBTel is leveraging this network to provide video services to its customers.

''NBTel was the first telephone company in Canada to be given a broadcasting licence and we are committed to
developing enriched and interactive television services for our customers,'' said Kevin Hastings, Technology
Director for Television Services at NBTel. ''The video head-end equipment that we are using to stream video to
the home is very new to us. We have had to choose our partners very carefully and we rely on companies like
PixStream to provide us with the technical expertise and solutions we need to deploy these new services.''
PixStream has been working closely with Cisco Systems, Element 14, iMagicTV and Newbridge Networks on
NBTel technical trials since October 1998. These trials are to be completed shortly and full deployment of the
service will begin later in 1999.

''PixStream is fully aware of the competitive pressures facing telephone companies in this day and age,'' said
Dave Caputo, Vice President of Marketing, PixStream. ''PixStream video networking solutions enable Telcos to
enhance their service offerings with cable-like entertainment without having to significantly alter their existing
networks.''
