Mexico has started to toughen environmental enforcement
against silver mining firms. AP 5-6-99 reported a terrible lead
contamination around the old Met-Mex Penoles (Industrias
Penoles) (IPOAF) silver refinery, the largest in the world.
Workers and even many children living nearby in Torreon,
Coahuila, Mexico, are afflicted. Officials have procrastinated
for at least 17 years on this particular refinery.
Maybe it is a sure thing that the Russian Dukat mine will be
reopened as a result.
