NEC CSD to Integrate 3Com's Internet and Network Connectivity Into PC Platforms for Medium and Large Enterprises
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 1999-- 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS - news) and NEC Computer Systems Division (NEC CSD) today announced a strategic OEM relationship that will place 3Com's recently introduced Internet and network connectivity products and related desktop and systems management capabilities in select NEC PowerMate® desktop PCs, Versa® notebook computers and Express5800(TM)servers.

As part of the agreement, NEC CSD joins the company's 3Com Connected(TM) program, and will ship a configuration of its PowerMate line of PCs labeled with the 3Com Connected brand.

With NEC CSD's 3Com Connected systems, customers will have easy access to the Internet or network through connections from 3Com, while IT managers receive advanced remote management capabilities to better control, manage and maintain NEC CSD desktop, mobile and server systems.

''3Com is clearly a choice vendor for PC and systems manufacturers, and has been a proven leader in supplying Internet and network connectivity products to the medium and large enterprise markets for years,'' said George Skaff, vice president of marketing for NEC CSD.

''Internet and network connectivity are requirements for our desktop, mobile and server systems, and by choosing the latest 3Com technology for select desktop PCs, we are helping to ensure that our customers have the option of advanced, reliable connectivity solutions.''

''As a strategic player in the PC industry, we are pleased to be working with NEC CSD. 3Com is committed to supporting a complete range of desktop and system management functions, and through the 3Com Connected program will help ensure that NEC CSD customers receive all the benefits of 3Com's ASICs for comprehensive PC management,'' said Wendy Walleigh, director for the 3Com Connected brand and program.

Under the agreement, 3Com will supply NEC CSD with its leading LAN-on-Motherboard (LOM) 10/100 ASIC solution with Managed PC capabilities for selected NEC CSD PowerMate PCs and Express5800 servers. NEC CSD will pre-install drivers for 3Com® Megahertz® V.90 modems with cellular capabilities and 3Com Megahertz 10/100 PC Cards as an option for its complete line of Versa notebook computers.

3Com 10/100 ASIC Offers Advanced, Remote Management

With 3Com's LAN-on-Motherboard 10/100 ASIC solution, NEC customers have access to 3Com's latest DynamicAccess® technology features, including Managed PC solutions, which provide advanced remote desktop and systems management capabilities.

3Com's Managed PC solutions allow IS managers to remotely ''boot'' new or misconfigured PCs from the network to perform operating system installations, diagnostics and repairs -- without leaving their desk. The result for NEC CSD customers is the potential for increased desktop control and time-saving system management coupled with an opportunity for lower cost of ownership.

Also offered as part of its DynamicAccess technology management capabilities, 3Com's 10/100 ASICs provide IT managers with ACPI compliant Remote Wake-Up capabilities to remotely power up systems to perform IT administration after hours.

3Com's 10/100 ASICs also are fully compliant with the Wired for Management (WfM) 2.0 specification, supporting Desktop Management Interface (DMI) 2.0 to help IT managers report system status and better plan and manage their fleet of PCs.

In addition, 3Com's ASICs are designed to support the system management and disaster recovery capabilities anticipated in the forthcoming Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Remote Installation Services (RIS).
