It's an issue that goes beyond load limits since in several years the limits will be so expanded that tv channels local and remote, BB telephony, BB Internet, all having common carrier status will be supported. The consumer must have choice. In BB internet that means that if you are currently in TCI's delivery network, you should be able to order WCOM-Comcast-RR or XYZ-COX-W just as easily as you could order T-TCI-ATHM. The same condition exists with BB telephony. The disaster that has developed from areal cable tv monopoly or from areal local phone monopoly can't be aloud to be repeated in BB. The difficult question is how you get to there from here since the universal attitude is, "gas, grass, or ass, nobody rides for free".

To all, I have this question for quite sometime. Go ahead and laugh if you think it's stupid, but I do need to get this clear away from my mind. So, please help. Remember about three years ago, the so-called Internet Phone was hot for a while and vaporized soon after? I do have a few friends successfully made it to function back then. One of the problem is the party you are calling has to be on-line at the same time, just the initiation of a call would be a big hustle. It got killed for lack of convenience. Since cable modem is always on, theoretically, it shouldn't be too hard to write a utility to constantly pooling a centralized site for every few seconds and check for the incoming call, right? If ICQ can be such a smashing success, how difficult would that be to create a centralized hub and to get Internet Phone becoming a viable solution again? Voice conversation over the Internet shouldn't create too much of burden to the bandwidth should it? I don't see T/TCI can stop people from doing that, and if we can call the other parties with cable modem connection, then I won't mind to wait till IP telephony become cost effective. The bottom line is this always-on feature of cable modem. Comment, please.
