Ha! ... instead of labeling it "shipping and handling", why not just call it "shipping and more profit"?

That's a good point. I don't see any reason why in the future the shipping options won't be evaluated separately for each shipment. I didn't realize that the shipping companies attempt to lock up all of the corporation's shipments.

You're right, seems to me that change will be inevitable. But even if the customers have no switching costs, there still will be a tidy oligopoly of FedEx, UPS, and USPS. That could remain quite profitable for quite some time.
