OT-Brown >can you trade on line fairly smoothly near the open and close >too and if not can you trade on the automated phone service >(also low cost) fairly easily? I've only noticed slow web perf. on open, not close. I've done several trades right at the close, was amazed that they went thru (my watch showed 2:59pm, cst). I don't use their web site much in 1st 30 min, if I have plans to buy at open, I enter limit orders well before the open. For example, in the last few months I've bought more dell 4 times, some of those were after weekends full of "bad news for PCs", ie, the recent CPQ ceo leaving, etc. Since I don't know how low Dell will open, I enter several limit orders at various prices, such that the lower it opens, the more I get - of course, I stay w/in my capacity to buy. For ex, if dell closed on a friday at $40, then bad news on wkend, I enter: limit buy 100 dell at 37.5 limit buy 100 dell at 35 limit buy 100 dell at 32.5 and I've had very good results w/ Brown w/ these fills. So, I am trading at the open, but w/ pre-specified orders that don't depend on web site even being up. Overall, I'm happy w/ Brown - have had many price improvements on my limit orders, I've had them check on prices I've gotten and they quickly call the MM while I'm on the line, & get back to me w/ more info (I was on hold while they talked w/ MM) - they definately try to please you, in my experience. EDIT - best thing is, they treat you like someone who has a clue - very few limits on things that lots of brokers are now starting to limit (ie, doing options in IRAs, super-high margin limits on internet stocks, etc). I don't do options, but I still like them treating me like an adult, not like an ignorant child. I don't use the phone option, sorry.
