In the Longterm, short interest actually does very little. In the ST it will increase volatility in both directions. Short interest, in effect increases the float so that are more shares available to pound the bid (selling and shorting) and the ask (buying and covering). Shorters are often viewed as a plague on the market, but actually can help in a market nosedive-> they may cover in a freefall, as some of the few buyers, thus slowing a rapid decline.
