There are several good reasons in my opinion why MD would consider a combination with IBM:

1. Continued price erosion in the PC marketplace will make it tougher and tougher to keep the revenues increasing at prior paces. High margin servers need good installation and support, and IBM has it.

2. IBM has had a tough time with PCs and may need Dell now, but may not later if they get their act together,

3. The Wang acquisition today may make existing support more expensive and/or perhaps change the quality,

4. Two companies (CPQ and HP) are looking for head honchos. MD might be afraid of losing one or more key people in Round Rock,

5. Being groomed to be a future head of IBM down the road wouldn't be so bad either.

If I were MD (and boy do I wish I was!) I would certainly be giving the above some consideration. I hope it doesn't happen, that Dell is able to continue its stellar performance by being the best and smartest management team around. So, "Say it ain't so, Mikey!".
