New Cornerstone Dual-Host Digital Terminal Doubles Line Capacity in the Same Space; Improves the Operators Business Case for Cable Telephony

PR Newswire, Wednesday, May 05, 1999 at 13:20

ATLANTA, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Arris Interactive, a Nortel Networks/ANTEC company today announced its new Dual-Host Digital Terminal (Dual-HDT) combining all the functionality of two HDTs into the same frame as the current single HDT. This enhanced design significantly reduces the space requirement for two HDTs in an operator's headend or central office and minimizes their capital investment in floor space. Part of the Cornerstone Voice family, the Dual-HDT is a versatile, modular system that interfaces GR303, V5.2 or Nortel's proprietary DMSx digital telephony switches to hybrid-fiber/coax (HFC) distribution equipment. With RF Concentration, the Dual-HDT can support up to 6,720 lines of basic and advanced services to subscribers. It is packaged in an attractive 7' x 23" bay that complies with Network Equipment Building System (NEBS) standards and European Telecommunications Standardization Institute (ETSI) standards. The new Dual-HDT will begin shipping to customers this month.

"Arris Interactive is committed to offering innovative and economical HFC telephony solutions that meet our customer's market requirements," said Jim Lakin, Vice President of Arris Interactive. "The scalable architecture of the Dual-HDT makes it easy for an operator to grow as demand grows without having to expand the space required for additional headend equipment. And, coupled with our IP Access Gateway, the Dual-HDT offers a seamless, cost-effective migration strategy to Arris Interactive's planned IP-based telephony solutions."

The Dual HDT includes the following major components:

* Access Bandwidth Manager Shelves that interface between a digital switch

and the Modem Shelves, and provides high speed interfaces for

provisioning and network management.

* Modem Shelves that convert RF signals from the HFC network into a form

that can be used by the digital telephony switch -- and vice versa.

* Spectrum Managers, which support real-time intelligent frequency agility

to automatically change the upstream frequency assigned to a call when

ingress noise could interfere and which serve as an upstream spectrum

monitor and data-gathering device.

The Cornerstone Voice system consists of a Host Digital Terminal, located at the cable headend, connected to Voice Ports, located at homes or businesses. It converts voice into digital signals at the Voice Port for transmission over the cable operator's HFC plant. The Voice Port is an environmentally hardened unit designed for the rigors of outside plant deployment in diverse operating conditions. It delivers all the enhanced telephony features (e.g. Caller ID, call waiting and high-speed modems) which consumers have come to expect from their local phone service.

The Cornerstone Voice system has been deployed commercially for over three years and has proven to be robust and reliable in twenty-nine different systems to date. With 20 operators deploying, or planning to deploy Cornerstone Voice in more than 40 cities and over 300,000 lines shipped to date, Arris Interactive is the leading supplier of HFC telephony systems. The Cornerstone IP Access Gateway provides a cost-effective migration path to future IP-based telephony.

Cornerstone Voice is being used commercially by more cable operators around the world than any other cable telephony product. Commercially deployed customers include AT&T, Black Hills Fibercomm/GLA, Cox Communications, Cablevision Lightpath, Time Warner, ITC Globe, Ironton Telephone/Service Electric Cable, Knology, Titus Communications (Japan), Jupiter Telecommunications (Japan), VTR Telefonica (Chile), Priority Telecom (Austria), tss (Germany), and several other unannounced operators.

Arris Interactive is jointly owned by Nortel Networks (Northern Telecom) and ANTEC. Arris Interactive sells its products through ANTEC for US cable operators and through Nortel Networks for other US network operators, international network operators and Canadian cable companies.
