Nope. It can't compete on cost and quality. You sputnik guys never get it. It won't work. In 100 years it will be illegal to put anything in orbit, but no one would bother to do that anyway.

I had worked with satellite for 3 years, with 1 year at Hughes. I can tell you that satellite wouldn't be a competition to cable until they can resolve the round-trip delay problem. Worse yet, DirecPC is still using 56K dialup modem for the uplink. The only hope for the satellite is through Low-orbit satellite. Only low orbit satellite can cut down the transmission latency significantly. GEO satellite is only good for TV broadcast, not for anything that requires interactivity.
