<I keep hearly people around hear talking about who would want to buy an AMD server for their company.. not which OEMs want to build K7 servers..>

Bad news: The two sides of the argument are related. The end users don't want to hear that Compaq will repair their server if it crashes. They want to hear that their Compaq server won't crash, period. And Compaq wants to make sure that their servers built around the K7 won't crash, or else they'll be paying for it with on-site service trips and dissatisfied customers.

Good news: You're right, Compaq has a lot of experience with servers. Applying the Alpha bus to the K7 should help ease the problems associated with bringing up a new x86 infrastructure.

News to watch out for: Now that Pfeiffer got Das Boot, I wonder what direction they'll take regarding Alpha, K7, Xeon, and even Merced.
