i am not touting ADI in this post (i don't own ADI stock). this is FYI for those who are impatient with the quality of voice over internet. the technology is continually improving and it is the only way to survive. no other means!!!! Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and voice encoding and decoding (CODEC) are essential to achieving the quality that is close to an analog toll-quality (a telco term) phone call and companies are investing R&D capital on it.

Analog Devices: Chipping in with DSP's
Semiconductor company Analog Devices (NYSE:ADI - news) is making significant strides in building its digital signal processor (DSP) chip business. DSP is one of the healthier areas of the semiconductor industry, with applications such as networking and wireless phones driving strong demand. Computer networking giant Ascend Communications recently chose DSPs from Analog Devices for its voice over IP gateway processors. Earlier this year Intel (Nasdaq:INTC - news) announced it would work with Analog Devices to develop DSP chips for handheld computing devices.>>

i will post information about CODEC developments later.
