Arresting him to poison him makes little sense.

On the contrary: it makes a lot of sense! See, British Law Lords won't be able to buy time for Pinochet for ever... Sooner or later, Augusto will have to take his one-way trip to Madrid! And such an outcome, as I said in my previous post, will annoy everybody: the U.S., Great Britain, Spain, and even Chile will not be pleased by the revival of painful memories and a new dividing of the Chilean people.
Yet, it made sense for Spain to call for the arrest of Pinochet in the first place: Chile is in the backyard of the U.S., so arresting the ageing former Chilean leader is challenging the US stewardship in Latin America. On the larger picture, the US are challenging European neocolonialism in Africa --just look at what's going on in Central Africa-- and Europe is striking back in Latin America: several Human Rights NGOs throughout Europe (France, Belgium, Switzerland,...) have joined the Spanish judge in his endeavours to arrest A. Pinochet.
But now, the European goal is achieved: the world over knows that Europe ''sincerely'' cares about human rights, evil dictators, and corrupt regimes --especially outside Africa and preferably within the US's sphere of influence-- so why bother any longer with Augusto's coming trial?? Let him enjoy his favorite Russian Caravan ride one more time...
