blankmind,

This is potentially huge for MSFT and a big blow for SUNW. RTev, where are you? We need to revisit our discussions on AT&T and MSFT ironing out this Media One scenario behind the scenes, with MSFT ultimately working out a deal that would benefit MSFT on multiple fronts.

Where are you?

I agree. Part ownership though may solidify the alliance but it will also no doubt cause the DOJ to take a closer peek. AT&T/MSFT aligning will cause the DOJ to skip a beat.

wouldn't AT&T have used Windows anyway - without any inducemnt from MSFT?

No. They were far more likely to be OS agnostic on their settop boxes, letting them run either CE or Java or any kind of embedded OS. I never doubted that they'd support CE as one of many, but I didn't expect them to settle on one supplier as Microsoft will, apparently, become with this deal. Teflon predicted it would happen just like this, however.
