Thoughts on Loral . . .

Maybe the failure of the Orion 3 launch is not that bad a development. They are saying that the cost ($230 million) is fully insured. Business in Asia is slow, so it probably wouldn't have been a big money maker for some time. Loral is now in the position of being able to manufacture their own satellite, at a lower cost than a Hughes sat, and bring it on line at a later date when demand should be better.

The only thing that worries me is that the next GEO sat launch is on the unproven Atlas IIIA. This uses the Centaur upper stage, and the Atlas is currently grounded pending review of the recent troubles. I wouldn't be suprised to see Loral start using the Zenit Sea Launch this year.

Checking the Thomson I-Watch website this morning shows that the institutional traders are indicating mostly buying interest today.
