Speech Recognition Usability is Major Focus of AVIOS Speech Developers Conference
The Conference & Expo Will Cover Speech Recognition, Text-to-Speech, and Speaker Verification for Designers, Developers, and Their Managers
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 3, 1999-- Speech recognition's shift from basic technology to issues in designing for usability will be the focus of the featured speeches at the AVIOS Speech Developer's Conference & Expo '99.
The American Voice Input / Output Society (AVIOS) is holding the AVIOS Speech Developer's Conference & Expo '99 in San Jose, Calif., May 24-26, at the San Jose DoubleTree Hotel.
Don Norman, a proponent of user-centered design, will speak on ''The future of speech is in the future.'' Norman is a well-known critic of the difficulty of using today's PC and other technology. A former executive at Apple Computer and Hewlett Packard, he is author of ''The Design of Everyday Things'' and ''The Invisible Computer.''
Clifford Nass will speak on ''Social responses to voice input and output,'' discussing his research on people's expectations of voice-based computers, automated call centers, and other media that use voice input and output. Nass is an associate professor at Stanford University and the co-author of ''The Media Equation: How People Treat Computers, Televisions, and New Media like Real People and Places.''
Candace Kamm will speak on ''Evaluating Spoken Dialog Systems.'' She will discuss a method of evaluating spoken language interfaces and some experimental results using the method. Kamm is a division manager in the Speech and Image Processing Services Laboratory of AT&T Labs.
In addition to the featured talks, there are 15 sessions focusing on specific topics, with over 50 speakers. In addition, there is a full-day tutorial program.
Tom Schalk, AVIOS President and Chief Technical Officer of Voice Control Systems, said, ''There remain many technical challenges in speech recognition, but the major market bottleneck is a lack of skilled speech application designers and developers.
