SGI cannot compete in price/performance with Linux clusters. SGI can sell at a higher price based on FUD of Linux. As companies report successful use of Linux as in this article, Linux FUD is greatly reduced.

Or simply stated. Linux clustered and SMP with inexpensive systems is continuing to demonstrate that it has the computing power to solve a higher percentage of high end problems.

I spoke with a colleague today and he reported the fastest single processor machine in the company was a PC with a celeron overclocked to 504 mhz with a 112 mhz system bus running linux. Tests performed were image and radar processing internal benchmarks.

Folks just keep poking pin holes in the Linux FUD balloon.

On the positive side.

Sgi owns 3.6 million shares of nine. I'd guess that the Rocket man approves of the new CEO and article in computer world is good for flat panel sales.

Hey I have even tried to buy 1000 of SGI at 12 recently. That's a 4 dollar upgrade for my opinion.

Tom Watson tosiwmee.
