Mark, remember that Canadien wireless company? Well the project is completed. Company Press Release Leading Canadian Wireless Cable TV Operator Uses Harmonic's Headend in Digital Upgrade IMAGE Communications uses TRANsend to Assemble a 'Best of Class' Digital Network SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 1999--In another example of the flexibility of its TRANsend(TM) digital headend, Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT - news) today announced that IMAGE Communications, a Canadian leader in wireless cable television, has deployed TRANsend as the heart of its upgraded digital system. TRANsend's open architecture has enabled IMAGE to upgrade its system with components from a variety of vendors, instead of using a proprietary, end-to-end system. ''We chose TRANsend based on its ability to meet our immediate upgrade needs, and its flexibility and scalability that allows it to be the long-term building block of our system. As a pioneer in digital wireless cable, IMAGE has considerable experience with digital equipment, so we knew what to look for in a headend solution,'' said Kim South, vice president and CEO of IMAGE Communications. ''As our system expands and the number of subscribers and services increases, we're confident that TRANsend will be able to grow with us.'' TRANsend's support for key cable, telecommunications and data networking standards gives it exceptional flexibility in operating with other standards-based products. In IMAGE's upgrade, TRANsend is integrating with set-top boxes from Sagem and Nagra Vision's conditional access system. Additionally, TRANsend's open architecture enables it to work with IMAGE's existing MPEG-2 encoders and other digital headend equipment, allowing IMAGE to maintain its investment in legacy equipment even as it extensively upgrades its system. This upgrade was completed in April 1999, and IMAGE will be providing more than 80 digital video channels and video-on-demand services to its subscribers in Saskatchewan, Canada. Beyond meeting IMAGE's current needs, TRANsend's flexible, expandable and open design will allow IMAGE to offer a variety of advanced interactive services, such as high-speed Internet access. TRANsend also supports the grooming of digital satellite feeds without re-encoding, which will enable IMAGE to economically offer more channels. ''IMAGE Communications is the latest example of a forward-thinking operator choosing to work with multiple vendors in a system upgrade, instead of a single source supplier,'' said Colin Boyd, Harmonic's vice president of North American sales and worldwide marketing. ''Recognizing this emerging trend, we designed TRANsend at the outset to be the 'heart' of a headend, and to support the development of 'best-of-class' networks assembled from individual components from multiple vendors.'' Capella Telecommunications, Harmonic's Canadian distributor, provided key technical support and training to IMAGE as it deployed TRANsend. TRANsend is also being used by Videotron, Canada's second largest cable operator, in the digital upgrade of its system serving the province of Quebec. Tim
