ST - I'm a hardware junky and am planning a near-term overhaul of my system just like yourself. A Rampage will -definitely- be in the package .. but as far as the mobo and CPU go you just might want to wait until September. You follow the industry very well so you probably know this already, but ..

The K7 (June) is supposed to really kick some tail - faster than the current crop of PIIIs at least. But by September Intel will be rolling out their Coppermine (not copper, but 0.18 micron) and according to Intel they are already getting incredible yields up to 733MHz. They said that there's a possibility that Coppermine will ship in September at 733MHz - their concerns about that being that they would erode their own prices ..

AFAIK Coppermine will have 256k ON-DIE L2 cache, which means that with Coppermine you get 733 CPU / 733 L2 / 133 FSB. The K7 will be at 600MHz by September and that will be 600 CPU / 200 L2 / 200 FSB. Even with those numbers, do we even know which will be faster?

I just think there's so much uncertainty that it may be worth waiting until the fall. Besides, who said Rampage would be available in the summer? By Christmas, definitely. I'm just keeping my eyes and ears peeled and keeping my computer money in the market for now. :)

Re: Sun's computer upgrading

Sun, even if Camino comes out in July (which I doubt - I've heard September too much), your best bet would be to go with a Celery right now and upgrade to a PIII come Xmas-time.

1. What will you have to replace to upgrade to a PIII? CPU, MB for sure, probably RAM, and Video Card if you want AGP 4x.

2. How much extra will I be spending? Because you would be waiting 4-6 months for the PIII, you would probably end up saving a LOT of $$$ to get the equivalent or better chip. This money can be used to offset the extra costs of upgrading now.

3. Why wait for PIII even if Camino comes out in July? Most games won't really be supporting it until around November. You will get driver-side performance increases though. But a better reason is that the PIII's out now are more like PII's with added instructions; the PIII's out later this year will be redesigned, possibly with a smaller die size. (Or so I've heard.) And by waiting, you will benefit from the price decrease that Intel/AMD have been making every 6-8 weeks. Plus, you'll get a chance to see the motherboard reviews and user reports, instead of just the preliminary reviews.

Heck - you can get a Celery 400+ and an LX motherboard for under $200. If you already have RAM - why wait?

Just IMHO,
Tim
