MAY 5, 1999, M2 Communications - Novell UK today gave details of a major sponsorship arrangement with The National Criminal Intelligence Service (NCIS) for the publication of NCIS's Trawler Report, the long-awaited strategic criminal assessment on Internet and computer crime.

Novell UK today gave details of a major sponsorship arrangement with The National Criminal Intelligence Service (NCIS) for the publication of NCIS's Trawler Report, the long-awaited strategic criminal assessment on Internet and computer crime. The report will be available on 9th June, 1999.

The agreement, set up between Mark Steels, head of corporate communications at NCIS and Martin Smith, Novell licensing manager for EMEA, allows for the publication of an unclassified version of the report in addition to the restricted document aimed at law enforcement practitioners.

"As a leading provider of Internet security products Novell is pleased to lend its backing to a publication as important as the Trawler Report," said Martin Smith. "The public interest in this field of criminality is phenomenal and the report will give an eye-opening account of how new technology is being abused for criminal ends and will stimulate debate about the ways in which such activity may be eliminated or contained."

Announcing the deal at today's 25th European Heads of National Drugs Services Conference being hosted by NCIS in Edinburgh, Mark Steels said: "This is an excellent opportunity for us. Our reputation for producing strategic criminal threat assessments of great quality continues to grow, and Novell's support allows us to reach many more people."

Novell To Push Microsoft Link-Up
(05/05/99, 2:12 p.m. ET)
By Karen Rollins, Computer Reseller News UK
Novell hopes to persuade resellers that it can work with Microsoft at next week's Brainshare Europe event in France.

The network operatingsystem vendor has been keeping tight-lipped about expected product announcements at the European conference, which will bring together high-profile Novell executives, end users, and channel members. It runs from May 17 to 20.

Tutorials, forums, and speeches will cover Novell's perspective on Microsoft's Active Directory, comparing NetWare 5.0 and Microsoft Windows 2000, NetWare kernel programming, and managing NT environments with NDS for NT. At the Salt Lake City Brainshare event in March, the company showcased the latest NDS version, release 8.0. The vendor also allowed U.S. resellers to try out its digital identity technology, Digitalme.

At the European forum, Eric Schmidt, Novell's CEO, is expected to speak alongside a London School of Business Economics lecturer about research into Novell and the Internet. Other speakers will include Sheri Anderson, chief information officer; and Chris Stone, senior vice president for strategy and corporate development.

Further support for the open source community was announced at the U.S. event.
