Stew!

Gotta love it. An RCA digital player with mp3 capability and bundled with a SanDisk ImageMate card reader!

Stew,

I think RCA has got it right. Affordable cost. Sufficient memory. Utilization of the money saving CompactFlash standard. Parallel port connector to allow for rapid downloads to removable memory. I am still quite surprised at the sticker price. They are practically giving these things away.

In my estimation any new desktop PC's should have a CF slot as a standard feature, or at least a type II PCMCIA slot like laptops have had for many years now. CF is just not going away anytime soon and it sucks that you have to go out and buy additional hardware because IBM or Michael Dell decided that a CF slot is a luxury.

Stew,

I still have not been able to find 32 MB SmartMedia cards at the retail level.

At BestBuy a 16 MB SmartMedia costs $99.99 while a 15 MB CompactFlash card costs only $69.99. (Note that a 8 MB SmartMedia card also costs $69.99 there.) Thus, the argument that SmartMedia is more cost effective just does not hold up to scrutiny.

One e-mall site I found sells 32 MB SmartMedia with a cost of $100 to 120.00, not much less than a 48 MB CompactFlash card. Strangely, none of the vendors have the 32 MB SmartMedia card on hand.

see for yourself if you don't believe me...
