Here's a story on the MSFT/T deal from the second edition of this afternoon's Seattle Times.
seattletimes.com

Microsoft dispatched Chief Financial Officer Greg Maffei to New York to work on the deal. But as the prices got too steep, Maffei and others brokered a deal that would give MediaOne to AT&T, Comcast a piece of MediaOne's business (see story on Page D 8), and Microsoft a guarantee of Windows CE customers.
...
To Microsoft, helping Comcast buy MediaOne or investing in AT&T made little strategic difference. The company's goal is to expand its Windows platform, and either deal helps do that.

And, ahem...
It's unclear if Microsoft plans to buy MediaOne's piece of Road Runner, a provider of high-speed Internet connections that competes with AT&T's @Home. Microsoft owns 10 percent of Road Runner to MediaOne's 25 percent stake. Other partners include Time Warner and Compaq.
