Industry Is Up in Sales 6.7% From One Year Ago

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Worldwide sales of semiconductors were $11.16 billion in March, up 6.7% from 1998 March totals, as reported by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).

''This month's numbers show signs of continued industry growth and a rebounding Asian Pacific market,'' said SIA President George Scalise. ''We expect worldwide chip sales for 1999 to be in line with our forecasted recovery.''

The Global Sales Report (GSR) showed an increase in all markets from March 1998 to March 1999. Chip sales in the Americas improved 1.6 percent from last month and Japan sales increased 5.0 percent. The Asia Pacific market posted an 11 percent increase in sales from last year. Europe sales also increased 1.4 percent from last month.

The SIA's Global Sales Report (GSR) is a three-month rolling average of sales activity. The GSR is tabulated by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization, which represents 70 companies. A summary of the Global Sales Report follows.

The SIA is the leading voice for the semiconductor industry and has represented U.S. -- based manufacturers since 1977. SIA member companies comprise more than 90 percent of U.S.-based semiconductor production. Collectively, the chip industry employs a domestic workforce of 276,000 people.
