Merrill Lynch's Blodget on America Online: Company Comment

New York, May 5 (Bloomberg) -- The following are comments from Merrill Lynch & Co. analyst Henry Blodget about America Online Inc.'s plans to offer high-speed Internet access to its subscribers. Blodget hosted a conference call earlier today with AOL President Bob Pittman about the No. 1 online service 's high- speed Internet strategy. AOL decided earlier this week not to pair up with Comcast Corp. to bid for cable-TV operator MediaOne Group Inc.

AOL's strategy ''hasn't changed. They've made the decision that it would be economically stupid to do it.

''In the near-term, it's not a big issue, but long-term it is the kind of thing that can change the company's growth dynamics.

''Cable companies will realize that providing customer support, doing marketing, costs a lot. To have AOL take care of that for you may be the right economic decision (for cable companies), especially when you gain access to AOL's 17 million subscribers. With its subscriber base, AOL holds a lot of cards.''

On Microsoft Corp. possibly investing in AT&T Corp.:

''The fear would be that Microsoft would sell its operating system on (cable-TV) set-top boxes, and make it so that AOL couldn't work on the set-top, or that people immediately join MSN, or use Hotmail. Microsoft has always had that capability on PC, but it hasn't helped them much. Again, there would problems with antitrust issues.

''People will use TVs for Internet access. There's a place for AOL in that.''

On the impact on At Home Corp.:

''It's a positive for At Home, because I think you'll see a merger between At Home and Road Runner.''
