-UNYSIS: Nasdaq signs multi-million dollar deal with Unisys for Windows NT-based systems Jump to first matched term M2 PRESSWIRE-5 May 1999-UNYSIS: Nasdaq signs multi-million dollar deal with Unisys for Windows NT-based systems to bolster growing electronic stock market (C)1994-99 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

* Unisys Meets Nasdaq's Enterprise Demands on Windows NT; New Application to Support Four-Billion-Share Trading Day

Blue Bell, PA -- Unisys Corporation today announced that The Nasdaq Stock Market, the fastest growing domestic stock market and the world's first and largest electronic market, has made a $2.1 million investment in Windows NT-based Unisys enterprise server technology for a real-time surveillance and troubleshooting application. This critical new application will track every transaction on Nasdaq and help to ensure regulatory compliance throughout the trading day.

The new monitoring and alert detection solution will allow Nasdaq's MarketWatch Surveillance Delivery Real-time (SDR) application to follow more than 800 trades per second and respond immediately to trading developments. Backed by unequaled Unisys expertise that has primed Microsoft Windows NT for critical, enterprise-scale projects, this application will enable Nasdaq to ensure the fairness of all trades and protect the integrity of the marketplace. MarketWatch SDR will utilize top-of-the-line Unisys Aquanta ES 5000 four-way servers with Intel Pentium III Xeon chips running on Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition. The solution will also use Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 and other Microsoft software.

Nasdaq will also begin testing Unisys new esPerformance, esUptime and esManagement suite of software, which enhance the capability of Windows NT to support mission-critical applications.

The exponential increase in Nasdaq market activity required an overhaul of MarketWatch technology to support four billion shares traded daily, according to Nasdaq.

In an industry-wide bid and benchmark competition, Unisys and New York-based MicroModeling Associates proved that the Windows NT-based MarketWatch SDR application could support those requirements. The benchmark testing used actual market trading data, with two parallel systems processing the same data and running 800 messages per second continuously for an equivalent of eight trading days. The test provided MarketWatch analysts with alerts within 200 to 700 milliseconds, well within the two-second-response requirement. In addition, the simulation showed that the system could remain 100-percent available even under stress and demonstrated instant recovery from all failure tests with no data loss.

"Running mission critical applications on enterprise NT-based systems involves more than shipping a box with pre-loaded software. It takes a large-scale system mentality with integration expertise, overall system performance, knowledge of Microsoft products and reliable support of the entire environment," said Gregor S. Bailar, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. (NASD), the parent of The Nasdaq-Amex Market Group, Inc., which operates The Nasdaq Stock Market. "Unisys stood out in its ability to provide critical solutions for critical business applications like MarketWatch SDR."

"As a long-standing partner, Unisys understands the increased challenges faced by Nasdaq. Leveraging powerful and reliable NT-based technology, we are helping them remain focused on their business objective-running the fastest growing stock market in the U.S. with maximum speed, efficiency and security," said Joseph McGrath, Unisys senior vice president and chief marketing officer. "Unisys takes pride in supporting Nasdaq, one of the truest examples of electronic business in the world."

"Microsoft works closely with enterprise partners like Unisys to deliver mission critical, high performance solutions in demanding industries like global financial services", said Jim Allchin, Senior vice president, Business, and Enterprise Division at Microsoft. "Nasdaq's real- time trade monitoring system will showcase the scalability and the reliability of Windows NT Server 4.0, as well as the capabilities of Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 in a transaction intensive environment."

Unisys: Delivering Enterprise-Class Windows NT-based Solutions Drawing on both proven expertise in building large-scale, mission-critical systems and a 15-year relationship with Microsoft, Unisys delivers the industry's most comprehensive range of information and support services, solutions and enterprise server technologies to help customers deploy Windows NT for enterprise computing.
