daytraders go get lunch around 11am, so they sell their positions. daytraders get back around 12-12:30, open new positions, and close them out around 3. It used to be 3:30, until everyone noticed the pattern, so people have been closing positions earlier and earlier. This will remain a pattern until enough people notice it and it no longer has any value. But the fact remains that east coast daytraders (majority of the firms are east coast time zone) have to eat lunch every day.
