3Com to Unveil Wireless Network Products for Small Businesses
Bloomberg - 5/6 00:04

Santa Clara, California, May 6 (Bloomberg) -- 3Com Corp., the No. 2
maker of networking equipment, said it will unveil products for
linking corporate computers with high-speed wireless technology as it
seeks to boost sales.

3Com's new AirConnect product line will include low-cost module cards
and other gear used to connect desktop and laptop computers into local
area networks, or LANs, said Rich Redelfs, general manager of 3Com's
Wireless Connectivity unit.

The company is looking to new products amid slowing sales of its
low-cost modems and computer-connector cards and competition from
No. 1 networking company Cisco Systems Inc. in the market for expensive
networking systems. 3Com, which makes the PalmPilot hand-held computer,
wants to sell more products to consumers and businesses with fewer
than 500 workers, yet the relatively high cost of existing wireless
LAN products has hampered demand. ''They should be focusing on
(small-to mid-size businesses), but the wireless market hasn't taken
off yet,'' said Brendan Hannigan, an analyst with market researcher
Forrester Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Most businesses link their PCs to each other and the Internet with gear
that uses so-called Ethernet technology, which is faster and cheaper
than using wireless hookups.

3Com is among the leading sellers of low-cost Ethernet gear, yet it
faces increased competition from larger rivals like No. 1 computer
chipmaker Intel Corp., which has added new networking products and
priced them aggressively.

The 3Com wireless products will be unveiled at the Networld+Interop
show in Las Vegas next week and are expected to be available in the
third quarter, Redelfs said.

3Com is expected to begin selling a PalmPilot with a wireless Internet
connection in June.

Santa Clara, California-based 3Com shares were unchanged at 25 7/8
yesterday.
