HWP-EMC: Another possibility

The fundamental problem that HWP and other computer vendors face is that as Storage Area Networks (SANs) mature over the next 3-5 years, the "value add" portion of the enterprise computer market will increasingly migrate from the processor (the traditional focus) to the data (the new focus).

Historically, the computer world revolved around the mainframe and storage was literally a "peripheral". Then SUNW came along with its (now retired) mantra "The network is the computer". Unfortunately for the computer box makers the obvious corollary to this mantra is that if the network really is the computer than your data is your company. Thus for the past decade the focus has increasingly been on the care and feeding of the endlessly growing mountains of online data which, literally, are the lifeblood of the enterprise. The initial impetus for this was Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) but that is now starting to give way to e-commerce. And in this new world the traditional mainframe hierarchy is completely reversed. The storage system is now moving to the center and the processor is becoming a peripheral. Small wonder, then, that a company like HWP would want to try to establish its own storage identity before this trend relegates their processor business to the periphery.

This fundamental trend is the reason why EMC should be considered a core holding. As storage continues to move to the center of the enterprise, EMC sits at the hub of the e-commerce wheel.
