We should also not lose sight of the following things pointed out by EMC regarding the prior HP sales (roughly paraphrased, hopefully accurately):

1. Every HP storage box says EMC, not HP, on it.

2. Most HP storage sales, when they got down to the final stages, involved an identified EMC support backup person dealing with the HP customer along with the HP rep.

3. The guy that helped the HP customer install the box and get it going was, and was identified as, an EMC guy, not a HP guy.

4. The number that the HP customer calls for help related to his HP storage equipment is identified as an EMC number, with EMC-identified personnel answering.

If one assumes that the heretofore installed HP/EMC storage systems are working, and if they are identified as EMC product, and if they are kept going successfully with EMC support, and if they are run successfully on EMC software, it is not unreasonable to expect that even within the HP customer world, it is likely that a significant percentage of HP storage system customers would have a reasonably high brand exposure and brand loyalty to EMC.

IMHO that the EMC releases have correctly stated and/or implied that as storage becomes a more and more visible and crucial part of a company's information system, it would seem that such brand loyalty might well over-ride a significant amount of sales effort by the processor-box-makers (HP in this case) and that, even ignoring the economic benefit to EMC of eliminating the HP middle man, the threat to EMC's sales by the HP change is not anywhere as serious as one might at first expect.
