A few comments about the Bloomberg article:

Comment #1:
I agree with Craig Johnson from Pita Group who commented that, 'Cabletron has to prove it can win business from No. 1 network-equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc. and other larger rivals if it's to jump start revenue growth' and 'Selling part of the business doesn't address their fundamental problems.'

Comment #2:
Benson indicated that Cabletron would maintain a controlling ownership stake in either business. What good will this serve potential shareholders if the same tightwad is maintaining control. Isn't this the same guy who brought in Don Reed to make change and then send him packing several months down the road because Reed was trying new things and new ideas. I don't see where having Cabletron still control both businesses will unlock shareholder value.

Comment #3:
I agree that Spectrum is "one of the better network-management (software) platforms," according to Silva. But the only way to totally unlock shareholder value will be for Cabletron to spin it off and not oversee the day-to-day management. This will enable the company to once again work directly with companies like Cisco who have been turned off in the past by Cabletron marketing antics. Let's face it, if you want to have the premier network management software you need to have cooperation from the leading equipment manufacturers to allow you to include their latest MIBs in your product suites.

Comment #4:

"A lot of people don't appreciate the value built into this company," Benson said. No, Craig, you don't appreciate what value your employees built into the company. If you did you would be less likely to be in the position that you are in now.

Cheers,

Steve
