Scott -
DELL's storage architecture concept is based on 2 components.
1 - a fairly complete but limited product with NTAP (limited because it uses older network attached storage designs) - a product which should sell well in small and medium business segments, especially if packaged well and
2 - a less complete but architecturally advanced fibre-channel SAN design. This design is equivalent to the most advanced architectures, but DELL still has to assemble some of the pieces.

They have recently done what I would call a "marketecture" which combines elements of both concepts, allowing companies to wade in using network attached storage but allowing an upgrade to SAN by tying the networked units through a SAN switch. If there is good execution (assumed!!) then this might pull some fence sitters into a trial deployment.

As I have said before, IBM and CPQ are very strong in this space. EMC has good name recognition but is behind technically. In addition, EMC does not have the ability to do the systems sales that SAN customers want, and they are very high priced - more than twice the cost of products from CPQ. Presumably DELL will price its offerings very competitively.

DELL is being taken seriously in this space because they have a credible technology story and a history of great execution.
