Ascend's MAX TNT WAN Access Switches will be used Primarily to Expand

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 1999-- Ascend
Communications, Inc.
(Nasdaq: ASND - news), a leader in wide area networking (WAN) and
Intelligent Network (IN)
solutions for providers and users of the next-generation public network, today
announced that
Deutsche Telekom AG has selected Ascend's market-leading MAX

ports across
Europe, to meet the needs of its fast growing online customer base.

Deutsche Telekom plans to install approximately 90,000 new ports this year,
and will establish
Europe's largest MAX TNT-based dial-in access platform, with over 350

over three
million subscribers.

In addition to traditional services like online banking, databases, online
shopping and
information systems, T-Online also offers comprehensive Internet services.

The MAX TNT is a scalable, carrier-class multiservice WAN access switch
that manages up to
720 concurrent calls per system over a dynamic mix of access lines, including
integrated
services digital network (ISDN), analog, Frame Relay and leased lines. The
MAX TNT enables
service providers to deliver a wide range of services including
MultiVoice(TM),
MultiVPN(TM), Carrier Signaling Integration and Last Mile Solutions such as
MultiDSL(TM)
and network wholesaling.

''Our decision to choose the MAX TNT further strengthens our co-operation
with Ascend,''
declared Wolfgang Schmitz, manager of the Centre for Internet- and Data
Network Platforms of
Deutsche Telekom in Darmstadt. ''We are standardizing on this top performance
carrier class
equipment in order to meet the increasing quality and capacity requirements of
our online
business.''

''We are very pleased that one of the largest telecommunications companies in
Europe continues
to select Ascend's MAX WAN access family for its fast growing dial-in access
platform,''
commented Francois Barrault, senior vice president EMEA, Ascend
Communications.
''Enterprise customers continue to demand more cost-effective solutions from
their service
providers, causing service providers to demand more innovative solutions from
their networking
vendors. The MAX TNT meets these demands, providing a high-performance,
cost-effective,
and scalable access platform, with integrated voice and data capabilities to

growth requirements of the next-generation public network.''
