DENVER, May 6 (Reuters) - Internet communications company Qwest Communications International Inc. said Thursday its shareholders approved a measure to increase the number of authorized Qwest shares from 625 million to more than 2.02 billion.

A portion of the additional shares will be used for the company's upcoming two-for-one stock split, which will occur on May 24. The remaining shares would be used to support continued global expansion and other strategic initiatives, the company said in a statement.
