>>>>>I think we have the basis of an experiment. We take a few dozen males who have never sung and put them in rooms of an abandoned hotel, and a few dozen females, and we starve them until somebody sings. Butch need not have starved in vain. Until I know that Butch was not merely unwilling, but incapable of song, I will not rest easy. If he committed suicide out of false pride or refused to inform out of some misplaced sense of loyalty, to hell with him.<<<<<<

nihil, you are a sick and twisted individual. I like that.

No,of course you didn't accuse my mother of intentional starvation; you wondered whether, if Butch had sung, she would have fed him. I recognize that the fact that she had been feeding Butch properly, discarding the hulls of the seed, replenishing the supply, for a long time before she confused empty hulls with seed makes this a peculiar story. It's peculiar to me, too. But for all my crazy mother's faults, she would not have done such a thing on purpose. More likely is that she was depressed and distracted, not remembering particularly when she had fed the canary last, and because the hulls looked like seeds, not being reminded in the ordinary way, by a glance at the cage.
