Just speculation, but....

Individuals that short a stock surely are not ignorant. In fact I'm sure that they know a "lot" more about the way stocks trade than I do...that's not saying much. If there is a short position and they have to cover they are going to try to cover without being noticed to the best that they can. They will either cover early when they get wind of something or wait until the last possible moment, just in case an opportunity presents itself to pick up a bunch of cheap shares. I'm sure there are many other possibilities that I'm not even aware of.

A short squeeze would be nice, but having a company with value would be even better in the long run!
