Megatel to Invest $1.5 Bln in Brazil Network, Estado Says

Sao Paulo, May 6 (Bloomberg) -- A group led by Bell Canada International Inc. said it will invest $1.5
billion over the next three years to develop a fixed-line telephone network in Brazil's Sao Paulo state,
O Estado de S.Paulo said. The Megatel group yesterday signed an agreement with the Brazilian
telecommunications regulator, Anatel, to begin operations by the end of the year, aimed at installing
33.7 telephones per 1,000 inhabitants in 13 of the 25 cities in Sao Paulo with more than 200,000
residents, the paper said. The group hopes to create as many as 1,000 jobs over the coming three
years as it sets up its operations in Sao Paulo, competing with Spain's Telefonica SA, the controller of
the state's existing Telesp network.

The Megatel group, which includes Qualcomm Inc. and closely held WLL International Inc., paid 70
million reais ($40 million) April 23 for the license to build and operate the new fixed-line network in Sao
Paulo, Brazil's wealthiest and most populous state. (OESP 05/06/99 p. B.10)
