CNBC, MSNBC.....does that ring a bell...? Armstrong is no dummy. He is tight with IBM wich is the biggest investor in java development. He does not like gates and does not trust him just like many other Execs.

Eric, bad publicity can sometimes be a good opportunity to buy more (unless you are near retirement and already have all that you need). Sun is fundamentally in excellent condition for the next 10 years and more. Perceptions about the company will run high and low all the time, causing volatility in the stock price. Making money just boils down to this: Buy good companies when no one else wants them.

Mike

"What is funny is the guy on CNBC named Steve Frank brought up question like "Will AT&T like Microsoft software more than SUN's because of the deal?" and MA said "NO". These guys on CNBC would take every chance to promote MSFT and damage SUNW. I wish there is another
cable channel to watch!"

As an investor, this is certainly one of the questions I had in my mind. Therefore, I think it was a great question and the answer was especially positive for SUNW investors. He said JAVA has not yet delivered but AT&T is open to working with MSFT, SUNW or any other company that bring them innovative technology. IMO, this MSFT investment, is a non-issue to SUNW.

IMO AT&T made this offer to MSFT to strengthen its balance sheet. Who else can make a 5 billion dollar investment; not many. If Ballmer/Gates think that AT&T is a good investment, it probably is.

Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW - news), which already has a deal with AT&T, Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq:ORCL - news) and such ventures as Open TV and PowerTV each make operating systems for set-top boxes.

''There's a lot of people who want to be in this space. Microsoft just elbowed it way past these guys....it is unclear if AT&T will really start spreading the business around,'' said Gary Arlen, president of research firm Arlen Communications.

---- my take...
I think Armstrong's comments about having an open vendor relationship are just made to appease government regulators. Gates wouldn't sink 5B for nothing.
