Tandy and Circuit City Report Robust Sales Increases for April

By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter

Two large electronics retailers, Tandy Corp. and Circuit City Stores Inc., reported strong sales increases for April as consumer demand for new digital equipment remained high.

Sales at Tandy's Radio Shack chain jumped 19% to $289.6 million, from $243.7 million a year earlier. Sales at comparable stores, open at least a year, rose 18%.

The performance marked the fourth consecutive month of double-digit sales increases at the 7,000-store Radio Shack chain. The company reported the strongest gains in digital wireless phones, satellite systems and computers.

Next week, Tandy, of Fort Worth, Texas, will announce a new store-within-a-store for audio and video products, replacing its Optimus- and Realistic-branded products with those from either Thomson SA's RCA brand or Sony Corp. Tandy executives believe the new partnership will allow the company to expand audio-video sales faster, adding products such as big-screen TVs that it doesn't now sell.

Circuit City, of Richmond, Va., said sales in its 600 electronics outlets grew 17% to $666.3 million last month, from $571.5 million in April 1998. Sales in comparable stores rose 11%.

The company's CarMax Group, a chain of 32 auto superstores, reported a 45% sales increase to $150.5 million, from $103.8 million. Sales at comparable stores rose 1%.

In New York Stock Exchange composite trading Thursday, Tandy rose $2.5625 to close at $76.9375, and Circuit City rose 68.75 cents to close at $65.1875.

OT*If anyone is interested in reading a great (and topical) book by a smart guy ...

mjwhitman.com

I have no affiliation with Marty Whitman, his funds, or his book publisher.

If you read his letters at his website and/or you subscribe to Outstanding Investor (http://www.oid.com) ... you will probably be pre-disposed to getting your hands on a copy. Pay particular attention to the December 29, 1998 issue where MJWhitman waxes eloquently about LRCX and the SemiCaps in general. He was also there in AMAT and KLAC in the dreaded Summer of 1996.
