Coverage started on e-tailers

Legg Mason Wood Walker analyst David Trossman started coverage of eight different e-tailers. Trossman started eBay (EBAY: news, msgs) and Beyond.com (BYND: news, msgs) at "buy" but worried in his research note that "it may be difficult to produce long-term attractive returns on capital given the amount of new capital flowing into the group and the lack of capital intensity."

Among the stocks Trossman is not as fond of are CDnow (CDNW: news, msgs) and Cyberian Outpost (COOL: news, msgs), both of which he started at "market perform." CDnow needs to get costs under control, while Cyberian Outpost has to deal with a troublesome margin environment, Trossman wrote.

Cyberian Outpost and CDnow were both off fractionally.
