I can't speak to the payment from Corel to the photographer, but I would presume that there were no improper elements there, or they would feature prominently in the article.

Regarding the Hedy Lamarr issue, I think it has been a lesson to Corel management, but one they already had learned. I think Corel was actually innocent/ignorant in that case, as the designer apparently reproduced an image naively - Corel didn't realize how poor their position was until late in the day. But Corel was already addressing this problem with their photos before this. Just can't put the proverbial stuff back in the proverbial horse...
