What makes T and MSFT sure that cable will defeat
phone lines and satellites?

I don't think either one is sure of that. We focus on cable because of these big deals, but neither company is betting everything on cable. AT&T is already the largest wireless company and has been gobbling up spectrum that can be used for broadband wireless. They're also involved in DSL deployments over leased RBOC lines or dedicated copper to businesses. MSFT has invested in several DSL companies that cater to business. But does any of that mean cable is finished? Of course not. It will remain the best way to get a broad band of services into many homes for years to come.

Both seem somewhat on the sidelines in satellite broadband, but I suspect they'd both find appropriate ways to get into that when the time is right. (And BillG, in his private investments, is deeply involved in the new technologies.)

What makes you think set-top boxes can only be hooked up to cable?

What is a "portable cellular phone like device"? Its a set top box you hold in your hand...

Do we think Windows CE might be the O/S that runs these things? Some people do.

>>get their internet access more cheaply through phone lines<<

Its not cheaper here, if you consider the cost of the phone line.
